Do Not Build a Verdict from Suspicion
An unproven assumption can grow into searching for faults and then into speaking about another person's honor. The Qur'an breaks that chain near its beginning: do not let baseless suspicion grow into spying and backbiting.

The verse does not say that every suspicion is sinful. It warns against suspicion without sound basis being treated as established fact. That distinction matters when reading messages, judging colleagues, understanding family members, or reacting to fragments of information.
An assumption is not a fact
Ibn Kathir explains the prohibition of suspicion that has no proper foundation. As long as a reasonable good explanation remains possible, a believer should not rush from ambiguity to accusation.
This is not a call to be naive. Caution remains appropriate when evidence, risk, a duty of review, or responsibility to protect others is present. What must be resisted is turning unsupported suspicion into a moral verdict.

Suspicion can open the door to social sins
Ibn Kathir places the prohibition of unfounded suspicion alongside the prohibitions of spying and backbiting. The sequence offers a powerful lesson: a suspicious interpretation can push a person to search for faults and then spread them.
Tajassus is not ordinary responsible inquiry
The prohibition of tajassus protects dignity and privacy. Not every investigation is forbidden spying; legitimate review needed to prevent harm, fulfill a trust, conduct an audit, enforce rules, or protect rights belongs to a different context. Personal curiosity, however, is not a license to expose faults.
Backbiting can be factually true and still be backbiting
In the hadith explanation cited by Ibn Kathir, backbiting is mentioning about your brother what he dislikes. If what is said is actually true, it is backbiting; if it is false, it becomes a false accusation.

In Sahih Muslim 2563a, the Prophet ﷺ warns against suspicion, inquisitively searching into one another, spying, envy, malice, hostility, and turning away from one another, then calls Allah's servants to live as brothers.
The hadith shows that healthy relationships are protected not only at the level of outward action. They are also protected in how we interpret other people.

Fact from revelation: Al-Hujurat 49:12 prohibits much suspicion, spying, and backbiting; authentic hadith likewise warns against suspicion and spying.
Lesson: do not promote an assumption to the status of fact simply because it feels plausible. Separate what is actually known, what is merely interpreted, and what still requires verification.
Boundary: this verse does not cancel verification, audits, legitimate professional review, lawful investigation, risk awareness, or the duty to report wrongdoing. Thinking well of others does not mean closing one's eyes to evidence. No prediction about a modern event is drawn from this verse.

Is there someone I have recently judged mainly from an assumption rather than from facts I genuinely know?
Have I ever searched for more information not to solve a problem, but to confirm a suspicion I had already decided to believe?

When one suspicion about someone appears today, make three simple columns in your mind or on paper: what I know, what I assume, and what I need to verify. Do not pass the assumption to others unless there is a legitimate need and adequate basis.
