Different So We May Know One Another, Not Look Down on One Another

Differences of nation, tribe, family, language, and social background are not permission to build a human hierarchy of worth. The Qur'an directs difference toward ta‘āruf—knowing one another—and returns true nobility to taqwa before Allah.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَـٰكُم مِّن ذَكَرٍۢ وَأُنثَىٰ وَجَعَلْنَـٰكُمْ شُعُوبًۭا وَقَبَآئِلَ لِتَعَارَفُوٓا۟ ۚ إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ أَتْقَىٰكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌۭ

Yā ayyuhan-nāsu innā khalaqnākum min żakarin wa unṡā wa ja‘alnākum syu‘ūban wa qabā’ila lita‘ārafū. Inna akramakum ‘indallāhi atqākum. Innallāha ‘alīmun khabīr.

Al-Hujurat 49:13 — M. Pickthall: O mankind! Lo! We have created you male and female, and have made you nations and tribes that ye may know one another. Lo! the noblest of you, in the sight of Allah, is the best in conduct. Lo! Allah is Knower, Aware.

The verse addresses “mankind”, extending beyond one tribe or community. Identity is acknowledged, but it is not made the absolute measure of human worth.

📚 Tafsir Notes

Difference is for recognition, not arrogance

Ibn Kathir explains that humanity descends from Adam and Hawwa, then developed into nations and tribes so people could recognize lineage and identity. Since human origin is shared, ancestry itself is not the measure of nobility before Allah.

The measure returned to Allah: taqwa

The verse closes the door on hierarchies of honor built merely from ancestry, group identity, wealth, or appearance. Ibn Kathir emphasizes that nobility before Allah is tied to taqwa and obedience, not lineage.

🤲 Hadith

In Sahih Muslim 2564c, the Prophet ﷺ explains that Allah does not look at people's faces and wealth, but at their hearts and deeds. The hadith reinforces the shift from outward status toward inward quality and action.

🧭 Fact • Lesson • Boundary

Fact from revelation: humanity was created from male and female, made into nations and tribes to know one another, and nobility before Allah is measured by taqwa.

Lesson: cultural identity, region, profession, education, office, or economic status may be part of who we are, but none grants a right to demean another person.

Boundary: the verse does not erase identity, nor does it mean every behavior or idea is equally correct. Actions may still be judged by standards of truth, falsehood, justice, and wrongdoing without degrading human dignity because of origin.

Is there a group I quietly regard as lesser merely because of region, occupation, education, economics, or social circle?

When I feel “higher,” is that actually the measure Allah uses?

Identity helps us know one another; taqwa reminds us that true nobility is not determined by the labels we carry.

Today, speak with or sincerely listen to one person whose background differs from yours. Look for one thing to understand, not one reason to feel superior.
