يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَأْكُلُوٓا۟ أَمْوَٰلَكُم بَيْنَكُم بِٱلْبَـٰطِلِ إِلَّآ أَن تَكُونَ تِجَـٰرَةً عَن تَرَاضٍۢ مِّنكُمْ ۚ وَلَا تَقْتُلُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ بِكُمْ رَحِيمًۭا

Yā ayyuhallażīna āmanū lā ta’kulū amwālakum bainakum bil-bāṭili illā an takūna tijāratan ‘an tarāḍim minkum, wa lā taqtulū anfusakum. Innallāha kāna bikum raḥīmā.

AN-NISA 4:29 — M. Pickthall: O ye who believe! Squander not your wealth among yourselves in vanity, except it be a trade by mutual consent, and kill not one another. Lo! Allah is ever Merciful unto you.

📚 Tafsir Notes

Wealth must not move through wrongful means

Ibn Kathir explains the prohibition broadly in relation to ways of acquiring wealth that Allah has forbidden. The concern is not merely the label of a transaction, but the path by which wealth is obtained.

Consent must be meaningful

Al-Tabari presents trade by mutual consent as a permitted path in contrast with wrongful appropriation. Agreement should not become a cover for deception or coercion.

Boundary

The verse gives a revealed moral principle, not an automatic ruling on every modern dispute. Object, terms, authority, facts, fiqh, and applicable law still matter.

🤲 Authentic Hadith

Sahih al-Bukhari 2079 teaches that truthfulness and disclosure bring blessing to a sale, while lying and concealment erase its blessing.

Fact from revelation: the verse prohibits wrongful consumption of wealth and identifies trade by mutual consent.

Lesson/analogy: material terms should not be hidden and stronger bargaining power should not become a tool for taking another person's rights.

Boundary: consent does not make every object or method automatically lawful.
