The World in Your Hand, the Hereafter as Your Direction
The Qur'an does not teach us to abandon the world, but it refuses to make the world our final destination. Wealth, ability, office, time, and opportunity can become material for the Hereafter without denying our lawful share of worldly life.

🧭 Verse Context
The verse comes within the story of Qarun, a man from the people of Moses who was given immense wealth and then acted arrogantly. His people's counsel organizes blessing around four axes: the Hereafter as the goal, a worldly portion not forgotten, kindness toward others, and refusal to seek corruption.
Because the context is Qarun, the verse also corrects our view of ownership. What is “with us” is still described as what Allah has given. Human possession does not stand outside accountability.

Ibn Kathir: use blessing to draw near to Allah
Ibn Kathir explains that wealth and blessing granted by Allah should be used in obedience and in drawing near to Him through good deeds that bring reward in this world and the Hereafter. “Neglect not thy portion of the world” includes lawful enjoyment and properly fulfilling the rights of oneself, family, and others.
Balance is not a 50:50 formula
The verse gives no percentage formula dividing world and Hereafter. Its order is clearer: seek the Hereafter through Allah's gifts, enjoy the world lawfully, practice kindness, and avoid corruption. Qur'anic balance is therefore an ordering of purpose and rights, not merely equal slices of time or money.
🤲 Authentic Hadith
In Sahih Muslim 2742, the Prophet ﷺ warns that the world is sweet and green and that Allah places people in it to see how they act. The hadith harmonizes with the verse: worldly blessing is a field of moral testing, not proof that its holder is free from accountability.

Fact from revelation: the verse commands using Allah's gifts to seek the Hereafter, not forgetting one's worldly portion, doing good, and refusing corruption.
Lesson/analogy: career, investment, education, technology, enterprise, and public office can become means of good when acquisition, use, and impact are guarded. The question is not only “how much did I gain?” but also “what am I becoming through this blessing, and what is it producing?”
Boundary: the verse is not a license for consumerism under the phrase “do not forget the world,” nor a command to abandon work or ownership. It orders orientation and responsibility.
💼 Wealth, Career & Responsibility
Lawful wealth can support family, independence, generosity, and worship. Office can open space for service. Knowledge can solve problems. Yet every blessing carries risks: arrogance, dependence on status, justifying any means, or harmful consequences.
The verse therefore joins the goal of the Hereafter to the conduct of worldly life. We do not wait for retirement, wealth, or spare time to become Hereafter-oriented; that orientation works inside today's worldly decisions.
💡 Main Wisdom
The world need not be discarded for the Hereafter to become our destination; it needs to be placed as a trust and a means. Blessing becomes fuller when enjoyed lawfully, used for kindness, and kept from producing corruption.

Do I enjoy my worldly portion with gratitude and limits, or has it become my main measure of self-worth?

Choose one blessing you use frequently. Decide on one concrete use this week that turns it into kindness—helping, teaching, easing a service, giving, or repairing something—without neglecting the rights of yourself and family.
