Worship Must Not Make Us Blind to the Vulnerable
Al-Ma'un brings together denial of Judgment, mistreatment of the orphan and poor, negligence in prayer, showing off, and withholding small acts of help. Ritual devotion and social responsibility must not be severed from one another.

The surah is piercing: ritual that does not cultivate care, sincerity, and helpfulness is losing its moral fruit.
🧭 Surah Context
Al-Ma'un is short but tightly structured. Its opening shows the moral consequences of denying ad-dīn through harshness toward the orphan and indifference to feeding the poor. It then warns worshippers who are heedless of prayer, act to be seen, and withhold al-mā‘ūn—useful assistance or ordinary small kindnesses.
The surah does not belittle prayer. It condemns a corrupted relationship with prayer: worship is neglected, performed for display, and fails to shape conduct.

Ibn Kathir: harshness toward the orphan and neglect of the poor
Ibn Kathir explains that the person described at the beginning rejects the orphan's due and does not encourage feeding the poor. Regarding prayer, the warning includes those who neglect its proper time or performance and those who act so people will see them.
Al-Tabari: al-ma'un as useful assistance
Reports gathered by al-Tabari show a range of explanations for al-mā‘ūn, including useful assistance and ordinary items lent or given. The shared moral point is blame for a heart unwilling to benefit others even through relatively small help.
🤲 Authentic Hadith
In Sahih al-Bukhari 6005, the Prophet ﷺ says that he and the person who cares for an orphan will be like two close fingers in Paradise. The hadith supplies the positive counterpart to the surah's warning: care for the orphan is a greatly honored deed.

Boundary: the surah is not permission to pronounce on an individual's faith from one behavior we observe. Judgments about particular people require knowledge and evidence. The surah is first a mirror for reforming ourselves.
🌍 Social Life
Vulnerability is often quiet. Children, the poor, elderly people, persons with disabilities, or people who do not understand a system can lose access not only through malice but through services designed without them in mind. Al-Ma'un is not a technical policy manual, but it rejects piety that is comfortable with indifference.

Healthy worship draws us toward Allah while softening the way we treat people. Showing off makes worship revolve around people's gaze; care restores it to trust and responsibility.
