Work Earnestly, Because Deeds Do Not End with Human Evaluation

وَقُلِ ٱعْمَلُوا۟ فَسَيَرَى ٱللَّهُ عَمَلَكُمْ وَرَسُولُهُۥ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۖ وَسَتُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَـٰلِمِ ٱلْغَيْبِ وَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِ فَيُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ

Wa quli‘malū fasayarallāhu ‘amalakum wa rasūluhū wal-mu’minūn, wa saturaddūna ilā ‘ālimil-ghaibi wasy-syahādati fayunabbi’ukum bimā kuntum ta‘malūn.

📚 Tafsir Notes

Ibn Kathir

Ibn Kathir treats the verse as a warning concerning deeds: actions will be made manifest, and ultimately people return to Allah, Who knows what is hidden and visible and informs them of what they did.

Al-Tabari

Al-Tabari connects the command to act with Allah's knowledge of human deeds and humanity's return to Him. Accountability therefore reaches beyond reputation before other people.

🤲 Authentic Hadith

In Sahih Muslim 1955, the Prophet ﷺ teaches that Allah has prescribed excellence (ihsan) in all things. This strengthens the verse's work ethic: a believer's quality is not formed only by human supervision.

⚖️ Revelation • Lesson • Boundary

Fact from revelation: people are commanded to act; deeds are seen, and people return to Allah, Knower of the unseen and visible, to be told what they did.

Lesson/analogy: integrity means maintaining quality whether a supervisor is present or absent, whether work is visible or hidden, and whether praise comes or not.

Boundary: the verse is not a license for limitless surveillance, privacy violations, or a work culture that reduces human worth to output. Accountability to Allah binds work to truth, rights, and lawful limits.

🌍 Life & Application

Organizations need metrics and reports, but both can be manipulated when the only goal is to look good before people. Awareness of the Hereafter adds a layer no dashboard can replace: unseen work still matters, while impressive-looking work built on falsehood remains known to Allah.
